Lesson Notes:  1 Peter  1:22-25 (NIV based)

READ:  1 Peter 1:22-25, with vv.18-21 for context

v.22
How and why can we true believers make ourselves "purified by obeying the truth"?  And what truth?
- - "purified" =
Strong's # 0048 "purified; to make clean, i.e. (figuratively) sanctify (ceremonially or morally)".

If we have purified ourselves, why would a natural result or produced outcome be that we "have sincere love for our brothers"?  And who are our "brothers", being referred to in this verse?

If, from a purified status, we naturally have sincere love for our brothers, then we do we need to be instructed by God to further "love one another deeply, from the heart"?
- - "deeply" =
Strong's #1619 "fervently, intently".

What characteristics will be present and perhaps visible if a believer has deep love for fellow believers?  For ministry leaders?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
v.23
What reason is listed here as to why we true believers should love our fellow brothers in Christ with deep, fervent love?

What is meant by "born again" and how does that happen?
(cf. John 3:1-18)

Here, God has another obligation for every born again child of God.  How many more obligations for His believers does God have?  Name as many as you can think of.  And which ones of them are you successfully obeying and fulfilling?

What "imperishable seed" is being referred to here, that initiates, produces, and maintains "born again" and that comes "through the Word of God"?
- - Clue:  The Word of God is described here as being "living" and "enduring".  How can written words on paper be "living", and furthermore "endure" as living or stay living?
- - Hint: see vv.25b with v.12b.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
vv.24-25
What is the main contention being made in verses 24-25a?  What comparisons are being made here?
(Verses 24-25a appear to be a quote taken from Isaiah 40:6-8.)

Considering the "living" dynamic that or who is behind the Word of God
(v.23) when it is preached (v.12b), what is being stated here as to the importance of the Word of God in its role through which "born again" comes (v.23)?

In v.25b, is there any indication so far in 1 Peter as to what "word that was preached to" those Peter is writing to, the scattered Hebrew Christians
(v.1)?
- - Hint: see v.12b,7-9,18-19,21.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Do you understand the elements and dynamics that are critical for "born again" to genuinely occur?

For those of you who are teaching and preaching how to be born again, have you studied this thoroughly from God's Word what the necessary elements and dynamics are?  Or do you merely repeat what you have heard from someone?  Are you sure you have correct all of the necessary elements, dynamics, and aspects of how to genuinely be born again?  When you make a presentation for how to be born again, what happens if you have omitted or altered a critical element, thereby assisting a person to erroneously think he or she has become born again when in reality God has not granted that to occur because a critical element was omitted or altered?  Make sure you know what you are talking about before teaching how to be born again.
(1 Timothy 1:3,7)

For those of you who claim to be born again, do you have sincere love for your fellow believers?  If you do, then your sincere love should show - be visible and be felt by other believers around you.  What would other believers around you say about whether they see and feel your sincere love for them?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MAIN POINT:  What would you say is the main point in these verses?

IMPORTANT SUB-POINTS:  What are some other important points God is making here in these verses?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
APPLICATIONS:  What applications can you think of for how we should respond to the concepts in these verses?

PERSONALIZED APPLICATIONS:  From these verses, what do you think God wants you to learn, or know, or remember, or put into effect in your life?  How are you going to do that?
