Lesson Notes:  1 Peter  2:4-5 (NIV based)

READ:  1 Peter 2:4-5, with vv.1-3 for context

v.4
Who is "the living Stone"?  And why is He referred to in this way?  What kind of stone can be living?
- - Hint:  Verses 5-8 go on to elaborate what is meant by referring to Him as "the living Stone", so discussion on this topic may need to be abbreviated here until these next verse can be fully examined and analyzed.

How was He "rejected by men"?

Notice the word "chosen" in reference to Christ here and in verse 1:20.  Compare these two references, noting the similarities and differences in context of their surrounding verses.  From your comparing, what additional declarations are being made here?

Notice the word "precious" in reference to Christ here and in verse 1:19.  Compare these two references, noting the similarities and differences in context of their surrounding verses.  From your comparing, what additional declarations are being made here, particularly in regard to how precious or "of value" is Christ and His nature that makes Him alone qualified for the acclamations and activities described in these two references?
(Strong's #1784 - "precious")
- - Clue: see 1 Corinthians 1:30.

Notice the word "living" in reference to Christ here, and to the Word of God in verse 1:23, and to our hope from a new birth in verse 1:3.  Compare these three references, noting the similarities and differences in context of their surrounding verses.  From your comparing, what additional declarations are being made here?

What is "come to Him"? What are the dynamics of that and how do we do that?
- - "come" =
Strong's #4334 "draw near; to approach, i.e. (literally) come near, visit, or (figuratively) worship", agree with, acquiesce to.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
v.5
In what way or sense are we believers "living stones", similar to and perhaps an extension of Christ, "the living Stone"
(v.4)?

In what way or sense are we believers "being built into a spiritual house"?  And how does that relate to Christ, the "cornerstone"?
(v.6)

In this verse is being stated that every believer, "you also", "are being built into" "a holy priesthood".  Does that mean that God has designed and purposed that every believer is to actively be doing ministry, even average and ordinary believers?  If so, what obligations and responsibilities does that put on every believer?

What kinds of "spiritual sacrifices" would entail functioning as a holy priesthood?  List as many as you can think of.

What kinds of spiritual sacrifices would not be acceptable to God?  List as many as you can think of or that you have seen believers try to pull off as acceptable.
- - Two Biblical examples: lying to the church
(Acts 5:1-11), and teaching false doctrines and myths (1 Timothy 1:3-7).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For those of you here who are true believers, how are you doing on fulfilling your functioning as a holy priesthood?  What ministry functioning are you doing?  Tell us, so that we can praise God with you
(v.9) and pray for you right now.

For those of you believers who are not involved in doing ministry functioning, you do realize, don't you, that probably one of the first things Jesus Christ will ask you when you get to heaven is how did you do in the holy priesthood ministry functioning He had assigned for you to do while on the earth?  What will be your experience when you tell Jesus Christ you did not do the assignment He had for you?  And what will be your experience when you dish out excuses to Him for not doing your assignment, all of which He will immediately declare as being utterly unacceptable?  At that time, will regret become your close companion?
(cf. 1 Corinthians 3:9-15)

An extremely wise choice for you would be to find a ministry and get involved, or else invent your own ministry.  Willingly, gladly, and properly fulfill your personal assignment from God to be a holy priesthood.  You might even find this endeavor to be a spiritual thrill and a spiritual adventure.
