Lesson - John 2:13-25 (NIV based)

THEME - First Passover - purification of the Temple

------------------------------------------------------------------------

v.13 What is "Passover"?  see Exodus 12:1-36

What is the significance of the Passover for Jesus' ministry?  A: He was crucified during the Passover as the Passover Lamb.  see John 18:28

v.14 Why were there money changers?  A: Jews from foreign lands - needed a sacrifice

v.16 Why did Jesus drive them out of the temple courts?  see Lev. 19:30; Ecc. 5:1; Matt. 21:12-13; Jer. 7:1-11

Did Jesus have the right to be angry?  Why?  see Nahum 1:2-8

What does this imply about the activities of those He drove out?

------------------------------------------------------------------------

v.18 Was this a friendly, innocent question?

v.19 What is Jesus referring to in v.19?  A: v.21

Why did Jesus answer in this way in v.19? A: most likely they would become some of those who would try to kill Him later in their future, they “demanded” an answer from Him in v.18; Jesus was asserting both His authority and divinity in this reply

vv.24-25 What do these verses mean?  A: He did not need men's testimonies about Himself to prove His true identity and authority (see v.18) to other men because He knew their hearts  - that they would pervert it to selfish advantage - i.e. would not let them make Him into some type of ruler, etc.  He would not commit Himself to letting them be in charge over Him.  see I Sam. 16:7

------------------------------------------------------------------------

BIG IDEA - What should be our actions or response concerning someone bearing witness or not to us - who we are, our motives and intentions, activities?  A:  Let God be our witness - He knows what is really going on deep inside.  Example: how hard I was working in college yet getting lower than expected grades
