Lesson: ROMANS 6:13 (NIV based)

THEME - Confessing sins - the final part of counting ourselves dead to sin - declaring war on our own personal sin

------------------------------------------------------------------------

v.13 offer yourself to God... as instruments of righteousness

Q: How do we offer ourselves to God in an acceptable way to Him - as instruments of righteousness?   Rom. 12:1 "holy and pleasing"?  How do we become holy and pleasing when we have just sinned and are inherently sinful?  A: confess our sins for present cleansing  1 Jn. 1:5-10 - fellowship

confess = (Grk #3670) to assent, consent, admit; i.e. to agree with or

consent to the desire of another

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: How did a person get rid of his sins during O.T. times?  A: by offering a sacrifice     see Lev. 1:1-9 - at the entrance, expose innards to God and washing, pleasing to God

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: When animal sacrifices were made in the O.T., what was the state or condition of the animal to be?  A: unblemished, clean, without defect, washed, the best

Q: From this analogy, what should our state be?  A: internally or spiritually clean

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: How do we go about confessing sins?  Does confession mean we can lump them all together?  A: no - list individually

Q: What do we do about unknown or forgotten sins?  How do we confess them to be cleansed if we do not know what they are?  A: Ps. 139:23-24 ask the Lord to tell you what sins you need to confess

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: When is the best time to confess sins?

       1. immediately after it has been committed

       2. before prayer or service to God

       3. at least once per day - best at the end of the day when still fresh in your mind

BIG IDEA: Develop a new voluntary habit - receiving cleansing from sins by confessing sins daily - ask the Lord what needs to be confessed.
