Lesson: Romans 6:18-7:6 (NIV based)
THEME: further contrasts
of living under the control of the sin nature vs. living under the control of
God
v.19 offering ourselves
in slavery to our own sinful desires leading to impurity and to ever-increasing
wickedness --- slavery to righteousness leading to holiness or sanctification
vv.20-21 under the
control of sin & doing things now ashamed of which leads to death --- v. 22
under the control of righteousness, set free from the power of sin to become
slaves to God which leads to holiness & eternal life
SUMMARY: We have a
choice of whom we will serve or become a slave to - ourselves & our sin
nature or God. A benefit of offering
ourselves as a slave to God is holiness or sanctification = holy living or
setting apart for holy service to God
------------------------------------------------------------------------
SANCTIFICATION or being
slaves to God UNDER GRACE (v. 6:14) IN RELATION TO THE LAW:
the analogy of marriage
vows
Q: Find 4 freedoms
referred to in vv.7:1-6
- vv. 7:1,6 freedom from the burden or
authority or domination of the Law
- v. 7:4 freedom to bear fruit for God
- vv. 7:5-6 freedom from the bondage of
sinful passions
- v. 7:6 freedom to serve in the Spirit -
a new way
------------------------------------------------------------------------
BIG IDEA - We must be
actively offering ourselves as slaves to God in order to be free from the power
of the sin nature that will lead to:
1. holy living or sanctification = set
apart for holy service
2. bearing fruit in one's life - fruit of
the Spirit in Gal. 5:22-23
3. serving God in the Spirit to the
fullest extent - empowering of gifts in Rom. 12:3-8
