LESSON - ROMANS 2:1-16 (NIV based)

THEME - Morally good people are guilty before God

OBJECTIVE - to search for the characteristics of morally good people and make personal applications

Q: Does God condemn morally good people to hell?  Is this fair?

Q: Who is the "you" in v.1?

v.1 "you who pass judgment" , + v.5 "you are storing up wrath" = morally good people

v.2 & 16 they do evil in secret - not visible to outsiders

Q: When you see or know a morally good person, do you know for a fact that they are morally good in private as well as in public?

v.3 think they will escape judgment

v.4 show contempt towards God & their own repentance

v.5 stubbornness, unrepentant heart

v.8 self-seeking, reject truth, follow evil

Q: Why are morally good people unrepentant & stubborn in terms of coming to Christ?  A: pride in relying on their own perceived righteousness

BASIS OF THEIR GUILT:

Q: What does v.12 mean?

v.12 judged according to the knowledge/revelation they have

v.13 hearing but not obeying what God has commanded

Q: Is v.13 saying that salvation is by works?  A: NO!  See Rom. 3:20,22  Obeying the Law is the result or outworking of faith.

vv.14 & 15 Law is written on their consciences - bearing witness to their knowledge of God's law

Q: In America, Bibles are inexpensive & readily available.  Do you think God will hold unbelieving Americans more accountable than those who do not have the written Word available?

BIG IDEA: Don't be fooled into thinking a person is saved just because they are morally good.
